Taksirat Festival

A festival is one of humanity’s oldest gatherings — a space for community and shared expression. Taksirat Festival sits in that lineage. Founded in 1999 during a period of cultural stagnation in Macedonia, it began as a small independent initiative and grew into one of the country’s key cultural institutions.

The name “Taksirat” means “fate,” often with a sense of hardship, which the festival has since redefined into persistence and creative momentum. Today, it hosts international acts and over 10,000 visitors on its main night, while still holding onto its countercultural roots and original ethos.

Alongside its main music program, Taksirat has continuously expanded into a wider off-program ecosystem — including art installations, film screenings, theater performances, music conferences, workshops, showcase sets, and socially engaged campaigns such as No Guns, Stop AIDS, and Be a Volunteer. It has also served as a launch platform for emerging artists, while maintaining space for established names across genres and generations.

Over the years, Taksirat has hosted a wide range of global and regional artists including Kaiser Chiefs, Cypress Hill (B-Real), The Roots, Iggy Pop & The Stooges, DJ Premier, Laibach, Manu Chao La Ventura, Dubioza Kolektiv, and many more.

Across genres and generations, they all sit within a festival that for over two decades has acted as both a mirror and a catalyst for regional cultural change.
